At the start of the pandemic the world changed overnight, and came to a standstill. After the initial shock and not knowing what would become of us, at Areté we decided it was the perfect time to address our own front yard.
We decided that we would modernise our 1925 bungalow and plant an urban prairie in the middle of Montrose. First we designed and built the pavers that correlate with the volumes of the bungalow. This would modernise the look and give structure and accessibility to the garden. Secondly we worked on the plant palette: the plants had to be natives and provide food & shelter to birds, bees, butterflies and insects. If they didn't fulfil the requirements, they were not included.
Two years later, the garden has proved that it thrives under all conditions: rain, snow, heat and drought don't affect it. The garden hums with activity beginning in Spring all the way through Summer and Fall. And friends and strangers of all ages and walks of life stop to admire a garden that makes us all happy.
